What to Look for When Finding Shin Guards for Soccer

  • by

Shin guards are a critical part of any soccer player’s equipment. Everyone on the field needs shin guards. They keep players from injury, especially in more injury-prone positions like defenders. However, not all shin guards are made the same and players will need shin guards that fit them properly. Here are a few things to keep an eye out for when buying shin guards for your child’s soccer league:

Sizing is key

When it comes to shin guards, sizing makes a lot of difference in how a player’s leg is protected. Always make sure that shin guards are fitted to your player’s size. If your child is growing or they move into a competitive league, it might be time to go back for newer guards!

Different types of shin guards

There are several types of shin guards that players often use:

  • Ankle shin guards: These are some of the most popular shin guards for youth soccer leagues. This gives younger players added support on both sides of the ankle to protect the ankle from kicks. Many ankle guards slide under the feet and hook around the calf to ensure a snug fit.
  • Shin socks: Don’t let the name fool you. These shin guards are sturdier than they sound. Shin socks have guards built into the socks for convenience. They provide less hassle than traditional shin guards, and we’ve seen them used in youth leagues. However, if your child is older or playing in a very competitive league or playing at the high school level, shin guards must be approved by the NOCSAE. Look for that stamp when looking for shin guards.
  • Slip-in shin guards: these are some of the most traditional types of shin guards available. Slip-in shin guards do what the name implies; they’re worn right under a sock. While some socks offer enough compression to keep these guards in place, many players use tape or compression sleeves under the socks to keep the guards from moving.
